B.C. allows cannabis retail stores to accept samples from producers

Cannabis retail stores in British Columbia will now be able to receive product samples from federally-licensed producers.

That’s according to a recent bulletin issued by the provincial government, which states cannabis and producer retail stores licensees and their employees can now accept samples from a federal licence holder.

“There is no prescribed maximum size for cannabis samples,” the bulletin states.

“However, cannabis samples are expected to be of reasonable size and quantity and should have little retail value. A sample shall not be used for any type of inducement.”

The bulletin adds this change to the license terms and conditions is in response to industry feedback and is a first step in helping federal license holders to promote cannabis with samples, while meeting legislative requirements.

The Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch will continue to explore future regulatory solutions that will allow cannabis stores to provide samples to other licensees, as well as allow all marketing licensees to accept and provide samples to other licensees.

Providing cannabis samples to customers remain prohibited, however, and cannabis marketing licensees can only provide samples if they also hold a federal cannabis licence.

Consuming cannabis in a cannabis store also remains prohibited.
