Petition aims to boost THC in edibles to 100 milligrams

Nov 20, 2023 | 7:00 AM

A petition submitted to the federal government is requesting an increase to the amount of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) allowed in edibles.

The petition, submitted by Sarah Mills of Toronto, stated the current limit of 10 miligrams of THC serves as a suitable starting point for newcomers, but fails to adequately cater to existing consumers.

It notes the legal, regulated cannabis industry is unable to compete against the illicit market and that THC limits are contributing to a new stream of single-use plastics, contrary to the country’s plan to address pollution and prevent plastic waste.

The petition is calling upon the Government of Canada to increase the maximum THC allowed in edible cannabis products to 100 mg.

“We believe that increasing the THC limit will address the above concerns, will benefit consumers and will contribute to a more sustainable industry as a whole,” the petition states.

The petition adds both the Canada Competition Bureau and the Ontario Cannabis Store have already called upon Health Canada to increase THC limits.

The Canada Competition Bureau has stated restricting THC levels may not be necessary to achieve the government’s objectives, while the Ontario Cannabis Store has emphasized the need to revisit the current THC limits.

“These endorsements from reputable organizations highlight the importance of reconsidering the current restrictions.”

The petition closes to signatures on March 7, 2024. It can be signed online here.
